Governed by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI), R2v3 is the second major revision or upgrade of the R2 standard.
Here are the 5 Critical Areas:
1. Sanitization
R2v3 changes from relying on other standards to integrating data sanitization into Appendix B. Facilities certified to R2v3 Appendix B will be operating at the highest sanitization standard in the industry.
2. Testing
Many ITAD vendors visually inspect equipment for a "grade", but R2v3 ITAD providers will be held to the highest standards and will be required to actually test the equipment to verify that it is working, not just that it "looks good".
3. Security
Data security does not stop at only data wiping or physically destroying the data - it requires secure handing throughout the process. R2v3 requires comprehensive security for the control of electronics from receipt until the data is actually removed.
4. Transparency
R2v3 increases transparency by requiring certified facilities to tell their customers how data will be sanitized and whether it will be done internally at the facility or will be outsourced to a downstream vendor.
5. Quality
R2v3 requires ITAD providers to also be certified to a quality management system standard like ISO 9001 for the test and repair of electronics.
